LCC President Mary Spilde receives national women's leadership award

EUGENE, OR - Dr. Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College, received the 2012 Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year Award from the American Association for Women in Community Colleges at its annual conference earlier this year.Mary Spilde

The award recognizes Spilde for outstanding leadership and mentorship for women in community colleges, and for serving as a national role model for two-year college women throughout the country.

Spilde has supported AAWCC for more than 24 years including terms as president, vice president of resource development, and state coordinator. She helped establish the Oregon chapter and co-facilitates its annual leadership institute. She represents AAWCC at national events.

Previous AAWCC honors awarded to Spilde include the Carolyn Desjardins President of the Year Award in 2008, and the Oregon Leadership Award in 1992.

Other awards include the Association of Community College Trustees CEO of the Year/Marie Y. Martin Chief Executive Award in 2011; the ACCT Pacific Regional Chief Executive Officer Award in 2011; Outstanding Alumni Fellow of Oregon State University in 2009; Shirley B. Gordon President of the Year/Phi Theta Kappa in 2008; and others.

Spilde has served as president of Lane since August 2001. She is past chair of the American Association of Community Colleges board and currently serves on its Sustainability Task Force and 21st Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges. She also serves on the boards of the national League for Innovation in the Community College, the American Association of Colleges and Universities, and the Oregon Education Investment Board.

She is a frequent presenter, author and spokesperson and has been quoted in The Washington Post, PBS Newshour, Chronicle of Higher Education, and other media.

Spilde has a bachelor's and a law degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a master's and doctorate from Oregon State University.
