EUGENE, OR – The "Festival of Films From Around the Islamic World" at Lane Community College continues next week with a showing of "Earth" directed by Deepa Mehta of India on Wednesday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in Building 17, Room 307, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. The films are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
In an adaptation of Bapsi Sidhwa's Cracking India, Deepa Mehta's film "Earth" explores the dimensions of India's Partition through the eyes of an 8-year-old child, Lenny. The experiences, hopes and fears a young girl provide an intense portrait of the period. "Earth" emphasizes the rending aspects of Partition as the solidification of sectarian identities while reviving the lived experiences through a haunting story of brotherhood, friendship, love, and betrayal. Set in a historic moment that is imperative to understanding modern Pakistan, "Earth" is an provocative and profound film.
Coming up:
- May 23: "Ten" directed by Abbas Kiarostami of Iran
- May 30: "The Lizard" directed by Kamal Tabrizi of Iran
