Written and directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, "Youssou N'dour: I Bring What I Love" is a portrait of a great musician from Senegal. The film focuses on the controversy surrounding the release of N'dour's album, "Egypt," on which he often sings in praise of his Sufi teachers in Senegal. A number of hard-line Muslim clerics have criticized his use of music to present religious ideas and motifs, but N'dour resolutely maintains that music has always been part of the Islamic faith, in Senegal (and Sufism generally), and vows to continue this musical practice.

Coming up:

  • May 16: "Earth" directed by Deepa Mehta of India
  • May 23: "Ten" directed by Abbas Kiarostami of Iran
  • May 30: "The Lizard" directed by Kamal Tabrizi of Iran

The film series is part of Lane's Initiative on Islam and Other Religions launched in 2011 to broaden the understanding of religions in an academic setting. For more information go online at: http://www.lanecc.edu/scholarlectures/
