Dr. Amir Hussain lectures at LCC April 12

EUGENE, OR - Dr. Amir Hussain of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles will present two lectures at Lane Community College on Thursday, April 12 in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Room 226, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. The lectures are free and open to the public.Dr. Amir Hussain

From 2-3:30 p.m. he will address "(Re)presenting Images of Muslims in North American Films and Television." He will talk about the images of Islam and Muslims found in the media, how have those images have changed, whether there are differences between the images presented in films and those on television, and how the involvement of Muslims in the media has affected how they are portrayed. The lecture will be illustrated with examples from film and television.

From 5-6:30 p.m. he will speak on "Building Faith Neighbors Between Muslims and Christians." Christianity and Islam are the two largest religions in the world, and Muslims and Christians together make up over half of the world. Dr. Hussain will talk about interfaith dialogue in both traditions. He will discuss historical interactions, as well as contemporary issues for Christians and Muslims living in North America.

Dr. Hussain is professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University, the Jesuit University in Los Angeles. He teaches courses on world religions, and specializes in the study of Islam. His academic degrees are all from the University of Toronto where he received a number of awards, including the university's highest award for alumni service. He is the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, the premier scholarly journal for the study of religion. In 2008, he was appointed a fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities.
Since 2005, Dr. Hussain has published more than 25 book chapters or scholarly articles about Islam and Muslims.

This is the final lecture in the Visiting Scholars on Islam series presented as part of Lane's Initiative on Islam and Other Religions launched in 2011 to broaden the understanding of religions in an academic setting. The lectures are co-sponsored by the Lane Peace Center and the University of Oregon and offered in conjunction with Lane Interfaith Alliance.
