EUGENE, OR – Lane Community College offers English as a Second Language Classes to help students improve their English speaking skills. Students should call the ESL office now to register for classes that start April 2. Placement testing appointments will be available through the first week of April.
Non-native English speakers in the community take the classes to communicate more effectively at work, to get a job, to transition to Lane's college certificate and degree programs or to help their children with schoolwork.
Word of mouth is key to getting out the information about the classes and program. "Some people might wonder why we share information in English and in print about programs that help non-English speakers," Dean Cathy Lindsley said. "However, we surveyed our beginning students winter term and 75 percent said that they heard about the program from a friend or family member who encouraged them, so we really benefit from that connection to the community."
The program enrolls about 500 students per term. About 80 percent of the students are native Spanish speakers.
Classes are available in pre-beginning to advanced levels. Daytime classes are taught on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene, Building 11. ESL classes are also offered at the LCC Downtown Center on Mondays and Wednesday evenings.
ESL students qualify for LTD bus passes.

Spring term classes start April 2.
