EUGENE, OR - Dr. Irfan Omar of Marquette University will speak at Lane Community College on Thursday, March 8 as part of the college's two-year Visiting Scholars on Islam series.
From 1–2:30 p.m. Dr. Omar will present "Conference of the Birds," selections of well-known Sufi writings by the Persian-Muslim poet Farid Al-Din Attar who lived from 1142-1221 in Northeastern Iran.
From 5-6:30 p.m., he will present "Dialogue of the Heart: Seeing the 'Other' from an Islamic Perspective" exploring the deeply religious interfaith discussions between St. Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt during the 13th century, and Prince Dara Shikoh and Hindu Saint Baba Lal in the 17th century.
Both presentations are open to the public and will be held in the Center for Meeting and Learning on main campus, building 19, room 226.
Dr. Omar's visit is cosponsored by the Lane Peace Center, the University of Oregon, and is offered in conjunction with the Season for Nonviolence and Lane Interfaith Alliance.
