EUGENE, OR – The Lane Community College Art Gallery would like to announce the Yoruba African Art Exhibition Lecture and Reception.
Lane Community College and LCC Art Gallery are hosting a lecture by Dr. Candice Goucher in conjunction with the Yoruba African Art Exhibition.
Dr. Goucher is Professor of History at Washington State University, Vancouver, where she has taught since fall of 2000. Trained as a historian and archaeologist, she has conducted research in West Africa, the Caribbean, Mauritius, and the Northwest. She holds a masters degree in art history & archaeology from Columbia University and a PhD in African History from UCLA.
The lecture will be based on our current Yoruba Exhibition. This exhibition consists of the private collection belonging to Mary Johnston, Florence, OR. The exhibit contains works from the Yoruba Tribe of South Nigeria. The Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa perform ceremonies, colorful and lavish, with ritual songs, dances and praises. The ritual pieces in this collection are used in these important societal ceremonies that promote well being and contribute to the healing of misfortunes. The Gelede, in praise of women, the Egungun, in honor of ancestors, Ibeji, the deity of twins, Shango, god of thunder and lightening are among the many deities represented here.
The Lecture is January 23 at 4:00 pm in Building 10, Room 108. A tour of the exhibit and a reception will immediate follow in Building 11.
The exhibition runs from January 9 to February 2.
