EUGENE, Ore.— Late spring term, Lane Community College Construction Technology student Linda Perkins, with technical assistance from instructor Leonard Keen, built and designed a new gate for the main campus Learning Garden to replace the broken northern gate with a sturdy and functional one.
Keen credits Perkins for having the perseverance and vision to design and complete this time-intensive and complex project on time despite numerous challenges presented.
The new gate will allow easier and safer access from the Child Development Center as well as permit tractor access. The design of the gate allows artwork to be displayed during events such as Al Fresco coming up at Lane on July 29.
Dean Pat O'Connor noted that the project illustrates cooperation among numerous parts of the college, resulting in a positive student-centered learning experience.
The public's first opportunity to see the new gate will be at "Al Fresco! Cider and Bounty in the Garden," the second annual outdoor dinner fundraiser for the Learning Garden, hands-on student learning opportunities, and technology upgrades in the Center for Meeting and Learning at Lane. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are available online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1691352 Event sponsors include Wildcraft Cider Works, Datalogic, Harmony Dental, and Lane Forest Products.
