Learning Communities are a great way to learn! Learning Communities usually consist of a number of linked classes. You take classes with a number of the same students which makes it easier to find a study partner or just to have someone to ask questions. Also, the topics and issues addressed in Learning Communities are approached more like they would be in the real world: from multiple perspectives. Academic work makes better sense when it is integrated rather than fragmented into individual disciplines. 

Here is what students have said about Learning Communities at Lane:

• The learning community is a good way to meet multiple program requirements at the same time.
• Yes, I would recommend a learning community as it does help considerably in balancing the homework & study load. It creates more of a steady work-load for the entire term as opposed to slacking off until midterms & finals which generally take place at the same time in the term for all classes.
• I think it is a good way to kill 2 birds w/ one stone, so to speak. They correlate together providing a common interest.
• I found that the environment of the class created a helpful and friendly atmosphere in which the interactions with the teacher and fellow students was stronger.
• One class reinforces another, creating greater diversity in class.
• The main reason is because of the flexibility between the 2 classes and teachers. And the fact that in one block of time, you cover 2 courses.
• I feel that the two classes fed each other. Things that I didnít understand in one class were made clearer in the other.
• It is a good way to get different points of view from different teachers and students on similar subjects.
• The discussions in the English class helped me understand the social and ethical issues in the biology class, which helped in understanding the technical parts of the readings in the English.
• The classmates were able to get to know each other really well so we were all able to work together in both classes.
