General Characteristics:
A Laundry Worker is responsible for picking up and delivering laundry to sites on and off campus; sorts, weighs and records poundage, loads and unloads, washes, dries, folds, irons and repairs clothing, linen and other washables in the College's large scale, commercial type laundry; performs custodial tasks; performs minor maintenance on the laundry equipment, boiler and battery operated delivery vehicle; maintains billing records and bills clients; may act as lead worker in the absence of the Manager within defined scope; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift and carry heavy loads and operate presses and mangles. Working conditions include working in a hot and humid environment and potential exposure to body fluids.
Examples of Work:
Picks up, sorts according to color and material, weighs and records poundage, washes, dries, folds, presses, irons and delivers laundry.
Selects the correct washing formulas for various clothing and linens; prepares soaps, bleaches, bluing and starch according to predetermined formulas; may perform titration chemistry tests.
Blows down the boiler, treats the water and checks for needed repairs daily.
Inspects equipment and machinery; performs simple preventive maintenance, minor repairs and adjustments, as needed.
Inspects battery-operated delivery vehicle and laundry van; checks battery water level and tire pressure; performs simple maintenance; operates vehicle safely around campus; drives forklift to bring in supplies or machinery on an occasional basis.
Mends, darns or repairs clothing or linen as required; designs fabricates specialty sewing items.
Performs clerical and records keeping duties as required to keep records on count and weight of laundry; maintains records on external service contracts; provides count documentation and billing information; bills internal and external clients; monitors line supplies and boiler treatment chemicals and reports the need to reorder as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of textiles and colored material and their reaction to soaps, water temperatures and machine washing; knowledge of the chemistry of soaps; skill in operating commercial laundry equipment and in using the proper type and amount of cleaning agents; basic mechanical aptitude; knowledge of and skill in applying safety practices within a laundry; ability to type; ability to operate a calculator; ability to lift and carry heavy loads weighing up to 40 pounds; ability to assist another person to lift and carry a load weighing up to 130 pounds a couple of times a week; ability to safely operate a battery-operated on-campus vehicle or van; ability to use a limited variety of hand tools such as screwdrivers, hammers and air pressure gauge; ability to safely work around moving equipment and in an environment of extreme temperatures, steam, chemicals and cleaning agents; ability to read and interpret instructions and/or labels; ability to keep accurate records; ability to work safely.
Supervision:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Laundry Manager. Work is performed independently using established procedures. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions. Work is reviewed periodically for the quality of washing, drying, pressing and folding duties performed and the safe delivery of laundry in a timely manner. Work is reviewed for the quality of service provided to customers.
This position has responsibility for the daily assignment of work, establishing work priorities, monitoring of duties and training of student assistants, clients and hourly employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. One year of experience in all phases of commercial laundry operations, including washing, drying, pressing, folding, mending, sewing and record keeping is required. A current Oregon driver's license is required.
Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
