Purpose:

This procedure describes the circumstances under which exceptions to the competitive hiring process may be made. This procedure also describes the process by which salary placements will be made for newly promoted employees.

Generally, promotions are the result of a competitive hiring process including either internal or external recruitment.

Narrative:

A promotion is the movement of an employee to a vacant position on a higher pay level.

Generally, promotions are the result of a competitive hiring process (see Hiring Process), including either internal or external recruitment. Exceptions to the competitive process must be documented and approved in advance according to the standards outlined in Hiring: Internal Advertisement; Hiring: Without Advertisement; Reassignments; and/or Employee Voluntary Transfers.

Employees who are promoted through any of these processes will be placed on the salary schedule according to the appropriate salary placement procedures (see Hiring Rates: Classified Positions; Hiring Rates: Faculty Positions; or Hiring Rates: Management Positions).
