2013 One Billion Rising Campaign

2013 One Billion Rising Campaign

one billion rising logoThe theme for this year's Peace Center work is "Rising to End Gender Violence".  While we hear about sensational acts of violence against women in the news, more often violence against women goes unreported.  It hides behind a patriarchal curtain, despite the fact that one in three women (more than one billion) will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.  In the United States a rape is reported every 6.2 minutes.

The Peace Center is joining in the global "One Billion Rising" campaign.  The goal is to get a billion people dancing around the globe on February 14th to raise awareness of gender violence.

Come join us in dancing to end violence against women.  On February 14th at the stroke of noon there will be a flash dance in the Lane Center Building Cafeteria. It will only be 5 minutes long, so don't be late!

For those who want to learn some simple dance moves and practice, dance instructor Mary Seereiter is offering free practice sessions in Building 5 (PE) Room 132, 1:50-2:20 p.m. on these dates: Wednesday, Jan. 30, Friday, Feb. 8, Monday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 13.

You do not need to learn any dance moves to join in the dance.  Just come ready to shake your body in solidarity with women around the globe who want to break the chain of violence.

There will be a Lane County One Billion Rising Event on February 14th at 5:30 p.m., Wheeler Pavilion, Lane County Fairgrounds.
