All items were approved with the following corrected
Dennis Gilbert will place a hyphen on page 3 of all ASTR course
Paul Lancaster will remove the X in the 199 box for FT 261 and 262
Unresolved - ASTR courses are now approved to be Sci with Lab courses. Using the same course number without indicating there is now a Lab component will miss lead students who took the course before 2015-16. Compounded is the fact that the UO, who has the same numbers and titles (we are changing our titles to match theirs) DO NOT have a lab. Therefor, a student from the UO can assume they have met the Sci with Lab because the Subject, Course Number and Title are identical, yet I will tell them they have not met the Sci with Lab requirement.
Dennis led me to believe there was a statewide undertaking to make all ASTR courses the same and with a lab - I have not heard this is the case, in fact PCC uses the PHY subject not ASTR, and other CC don't even offer ASTR courses.
I have had regular and international students who believe they have met the Sci with Lab when they have taken the Physics courses at the UO but those courses don't have labs. This has resulted in some anger students, some who then don't get their AAOT from Lane and others who, since we have placed them in an unfair position, have been awarded the transfer degree using a the UO non lab course to meet a Sci with Lab course.
Here is my short email with Dennis on this item back in June 2013:
My question to you is concerning 3 UofO Physics courses; PHYS 101, 102 and 103 each are 4 credits. Do you know if they have a lab component built into them? I want to make them equivalent to our Lane courses, meaning they would receive the Lab Science attribute. The UofO catalog does not go into dept explaining what they cover as you can see below:
Physics Courses (PHYS)
101, 102, 103 Essentials of Physics (4,4,4) Fundamental
physical principles. 101: mechanics.
102:heat, waves, and sound; electricity and magnetism.
103: modern physics.
If you need additional information let me know
thanks for your help
