Purpose:

This procedure describes the responsibilities of the management supervisor when making a temporary assignment to a higher classification of a member of the classified or management employee group.

Narrative:

Classified Employees in Budgeted Positions

If a classified employee is temporarily reassigned to assume the core duties and responsibilities of another classified position in the same department for 10 or more consecutive work days (or as stated otherwise in the classified contract), the management supervisor is responsible for:

  1. Determining whether the assignment should be compensated at a higher pay rate; and
  2. Initiating the Personnel Action Form to initiate the pay change and return the employee to the original pay level at the end of the temporary assignment.

Compensation guidelines are contained in the Classified Contract. Questions about these guidelines can be referred to Human Resources.

Permanent changes in job duties and responsibilities should be documented and submitted to Human Resources for review according to the process described in Reclassification of Classified Positions.

Management Employees

A management employee who temporarily assumes the duties of another manager in addition to their own duties for more than 30 calendar days (or as otherwise provided in the Management Employees Working Conditions Document) must receive additional compensation.  The employee's management supervisor is responsible for:

  1. Determining whether the assignment should be compensated at a higher pay rate; and
  2. Initiating the Personnel Action form to initiate the pay change and return the employee to the original pay rate at the end of the temporary assignment.

Compensation guidelines are contained in the management working agreement.  Questions about these guidelines can be referred to Human Resources. Permanent changes in job duties and responsibilities should be documented and submitted to Human Resources for review according to the process described in Reclassification of Management Positions.
