Purpose:

This procedure describes the responsibilities of the instructor to students who receive a Letter of Accommodation. This procedure also addresses the action an instructor should take when a request for accommodation is made by a student without a Letter of Accommodation.

Narrative:

The Center for Accessible Resources (CAR) is responsible for determining students' eligibility for accommodations and implementing those accommodations and services according to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (link is external) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (link is external). Center for Accessible Resources has developed numerous systems and procedures to assure that the college fulfills this responsibility, including sending an electronic Letter of Accommodation (LOA) to the instructor of record for each course in which accommodations are requested..

The student is REQUIRED to approach their instructor to make arrangements for approved accommodations they wish to utilize. When the student approaches an instructor, due to FERPA regulations, instructors need to meet with them individually. If the student does NOT initiate contact regarding their accommodations, instructors are NOT required to provide them.

Instructors with questions or concerns about specific accommodations have the following options:

  1. Contact the Center for Accessible Resources for clarification (541) 463-5150 voice, 711 TTY, or AccessibleResources@lanecc.edu;
  2. Make an appointment with a Center for Accessible Resources Student Adviser or the CAR Project Coordinator to explore possible alternate accommodations that will meet the legal obligation of the college and preserve academic integrity; or
  3. Work with the student to identify some mutually acceptable accommodations.  Care must be taken to assure that this is a mutual discussion and that the student does not feel intimidated or coerced.  The alternate accommodations The alternate accommodations must be documented in writing, signed by both instructor and student and submitted to the Center for Accessible Resources.

Please note: Accommodations listed on the Letter of Accommodation and requested in accordance with the Center for Accessible Resources agreements must be provided until acceptable alternate accommodations are agreed upon and implemented.  Under no circumstances should a faculty member refuse to provide a requested, approved accommodation without discussing this decision in advance with the Center for Accessible Resources.

The Center for Accessible Resources encourages faculty to create an inclusive learning environment for all.  This will provide opportunities for each student to demonstrate his or her understanding of the course material.

The instructor should contact the Center for Accessible Resources for clarification as questions come up, and should refer the student to CAR for additional support, strategies and resources.
