Cindy Weeldreyer, community member and leader

Cindy WeeldreyerI remember, as if it happened last month, celebrating Lane's 20th anniversary the year I was ASLCC president in 1984-85. I was charged with going through all the ASLCC files to create a display on the past two decades of student government for the big birthday party. I recall how excited I was back then to meet one of my predecessors, ASLCC President debi lance (she uniquely spelled her name in lower case), after my research revealed all the great and savvy things she did the year that she was president. I also lost one of the rubies in my wedding ring that day while serving cake to our guests!

In the summer of 1984, my New Orleans grandmother gave me my first hat from her extensive collection and convinced me that if I wore a hat to campus every day that year, my fellow students would soon recognize me and be comfortable approaching me to share their campus concerns. She was right. By the end of my year as ASLCC president, my signature hat-wearing tradition was firmly established.

I believe two of student government's greatest achievements that year were:

1. Commissioning the beautiful stained glass mural on the west side of the Center Building

2. Beginning the Martin Luther King Celebration at the Hult Center

Also, in the summer of 1985, I worked with the college's Early Childhood Education program to begin an ASLCC-sponsored child care service on a trial basis. It has since evolved into the college's amazing Child and Family Center today.

It was a wonderful experience to be actively part of the LCC family for 14 years. I credit my LCC mentors on the college faculty, staff, Presidents Schafer, Moskus and Spilde, and my board colleagues who made valuable contributions toward the knowledge, skills and motivation I needed to accomplish the things I did at the local, regional, state and national levels in the eight years I served as a Lane County commissioner (1995-2002).

Congratulations to Lane Community College on this Golden Anniversary and best wishes for many, many more!
